On the occasion of the 25 years anniversary of the Visegrad group, the Czech V4 Presidency in Vienna in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy Vienna, will host a conference presenting the successful Visegrad cooperation and its future priority agendas focusing on cooperation in Central Europe, which will take place on 2 March 2016 in the Festive Hall of the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna.
Executive Director of Centre for European Perspective, dr. Gorazd Justinek, will participate on the second panel, where he will with other panelists address the Visegrad cooperation, targeting the successful V4 engagement within the EU and its impacts, to present the International Visegrad Fund and its achievements, as well as the perspectives of the future Visegrad cooperation focusing on Central Europe and cooperation in the region. The conference will be opened by a key note speech delivered by a representative of the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Hans Winkler, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.
OECD is organising a High Level Conference in Paris with threefold objectives: (i) to take stock of the co-operation between the OECD and SEE economies, (ii) to explore opportunities for future co-operation between the OECD member countries, the European Union and SEE economies, and (iii) to launch the OECD flagship publication Competitiveness in South East Europe: a Policy Outlook and two Policy Handbooks on sector competitiveness in tourism and food and beverage processing to support a broader, high-level debate on factors of competitiveness for growth in SEE.
According to the European Commission, an illicit firearm trafficking has been directly responsible for at least 10,000 firearms-related deaths in the EU over the past decade. Terrorists and different extremist groups are using illicit firearms to carry out attacks and the use of firearms is a significant destabilization factor in the European Union and the neighbouring regions.
Centre for European Perspective is starting a two-day seminar today titled Illicit Trafficking of Firearms in the Danube Region. The project proposal was selected to receive financial support from the EU Strategy for the Danube Region – START Fund.
Western Balkans region is often a source of weapons used in different terrorist attacks. EU believes that there are two main trafficking routes for weapons from the Balkans into EU: one in the south, through Italy, and another through Slovenia and Austria. It is also in that sense that the Danube region is particularly vulnerable from the security perspective, uniting EU member states and EU accession countries, as well as those which are in and out of the Schengen area. In the light of recent terrorist alarms across Europe, it is obvious that this topic is of key importance. Pressing issue is the purchasing and use of these arms by terrorists and extremist groups, by organized criminal groups in conflicts between criminal gangs, but also for armed robberies and other violent acts on a daily basis.
